      The article focuses on the diversity of flowering plants and their early history. It accounts the discovery of fossil plants and fossil pollens that were used to trace the growth of flowering plants in early times. It offers a comparison of the characteristics of angiosperms and gymnosperms and accounts the discovery of Archaefructus, the oldest angiosperm fossil. It also presents the genetic studies on angiosperm species which revealed essential information in the history of flowering plants.
