Humans are cruel to be kind.

The article explores the relationship between human's spitefulness and sense of fairness. Human spite is considered subtler than that of animals based on the fact that courses of action are influenced by psychological motivations and social contexts. Information is also presented on several experiments that were conducted in an attempt to find the factors that motivate an ignoble behaviour.
