      When streams cascade over fallen trees in uncut ancient forests, they dig depressions in the stream bed. These pools provide shelter and foot for both young fish and migrating adults. Coho salmon spend their first year in the streams of the Pacific Northwest, migrate to the ocean, then return to spawn.
