- Abstract: The Spanish civil war has been a recurring theme in literature and cinema. And it is notorious how many of the films are adaptations of--or are inspired by--literary works. In this article we examine this phenomenon in order to analyse the construction of memory through narrative variations, as well as the influence of the photographs of the conflict on the cinematographic staging and framing. The article takes as case studies Land and Freedom (Ken Loach, 1995), inspired by George Orwell's novel Homage to Catalonia (1938), which focuses on foreign volunteers, and Libertarias (Vicente Aranda, 1996), dedicated to women militias, which adapts Antonio Rabinad's La monja libertaria (1981). Both films have subsequently led to the creation of original photographic works based on photographs taken during the shootings. The first in the photobook Tierra y libertad by Paco Rangel (Polvora Verlag, 2021), and the second in Memorias revolucionarias by Martí Llorens (Mestizo, 1999), adding a third layer to the dialogues between stories and imaginaries.
