    • Abstract:
The article discusses the impact of cellulose on the economy of the southern states in the U.S. In the past, the South was the world's largest producer of cotton fiber, the purest form of cellulose. Foreign cotton production and competition from rayon production has limited the amount of cotton that the South has been able to market to the rest of the world, severely hampering its economic climate. Recently, the manufacturing of cellulose through wood pulp has grown tremendously and has potential to boost the economy of the South. The author points out some of the reasons why the South has remained a struggling economy, and offers some suggestions on how the South can positively impact it.
