      An essay is presented which explores 18th century literature and digital media and entertainment in the 21st century. Topics discussed include virtual reality technologies which allow production of fictional worlds created in literature, media entertainment viewing limitations particularly in terms of the depiction of literary characters, and casual gaming practices which served as antecedents for alternate reality games (ARG).
