      This article profiles children's book author Virginia Haviland, who was born on May 21, 1911 in Rochester, New York and died on January 6, 1998 in Washington, D.C. Haviland spent much of her life working toward the improvement and promotion of children's literature. She began her career as a librarian at the Boston Public Library where she served in several capacities. Her first publication, Children and Their Friends the Authors, was published in the Boston Public Library Quarterly in 1946.
