In case when athletes use drugs to create bodies that nature can't make, not only is their performance enhanced, they lose the moral center that makes sports worthwhile. Besides that, steroids cause acute acne, liver dysfunction, renal failure, testicular atrophy and brain cancer and they can kill them. Let's assume baseball's Steroid Asterisk Era began as a palliative for the 1994 labor sickness. In the nine seasons since, teams have averaged 173 home runs a season. In the nine full seasons from 1985 through 1993, teams averaged 135 home runs. That's a difference of 28 percent. For comparison's sake: That 28 percent rise is more than double the 12.5 percent rise in the nine full seasons preceding 1985. The current nine-year run is a 44 percent increase in home runs over the total in the nine full seasons from 1975-84.
