      This article examines the effects of a large dam on tourism and attractiveness at a pre-existing destination through a longitudinal study. Based on qualitative and quantitative data collected over the past 15 years, the study shows that the Great Lake created by the construction of the Alqueva dam added attractiveness to Monsaraz and stimulated the growth of tourism in the village and its surrounding area. This has boosted the local economy, but also brought about concerns on the lack of security in the village and heightened the obstacles to the self-reproduction of its community.       Este artigo examina, através de um estudo longitudinal, os efeitos de uma grande barragem sobre o turismo e a atratividade num destino preexistente. Com base em dados qualitativos e quantitativos recolhidos sensivelmente nos últimos 15 anos, o estudo mostra que o Grande Lago, criado pela construção da barragem de Alqueva, acrescentou atratividade a Monsaraz e estimulou o crescimento do turismo na povoação e na área envolvente. Isto dinamizou a economia local, mas também trouxe preocupações com a falta de segurança na aldeia e acentuou os obstáculos à autorreprodução da sua população. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
