The Thompson Family: Untold Stories from the Past (1830-1960)
Hurd/St. Andrews Library - Join us for a presentation by Dr. Walter Curry on The Thompson Family: Untold Stories from The Past (1830-1960), which chronicles the rich history of this Aiken County family. Several narratives shed light on this rich history, from a slave who purchased his freedom to an enslaved relative who served as a cook in the Confederate Army, and more.
This book provides thoughtful insight on how family stories of hard life in servitude as slaves and sharecroppers to achieving personal successes, personal/civic responsibility, sacrifice, ultimate freedom, overcoming adversity, and redemption gives us all a greater appreciation of how the past helps shape our narrative today.
Dr. Curry is founder of Renaissance Publications, LLC. He received the 2019 African American Historical and Genealogical Society Book Award for his book, The Thompson Family: Untold Stories From The Past (1830-1960). His work has received recognition from the South Carolina General Assembly.
