CHARLESTON, SC - This September Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) is joining the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide for Library Card Sign-Up Month, a time to remind parents, caregivers and students that a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning.

Throughout the month, CCPL will be marking this event by visiting schools to encourage card sign-ups, featuring local celebrities posing with their library cards on its social media platforms and online contests with free giveaways, provided by local sponsors.

A library card opens a world of infinite possibilities through resources and services that give students the tools to succeed in school and beyond. From STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) programs, family storytimes, workforce development resources and to makerspaces, libraries transform lives through education.

Libraries offer free and fun educational resources and activities that bring families and communities together. CCPL offers food literacy programs in partnership with the Lowcountry Food Bank to provide cooking courses throughout the year at many of its locations. The Library’s Tech Team provides technology classes from basic computing to learning how to cut the cable cord and stream television and video.

CCPL also checks out items beyond books such as DVD/Blu-Ray’s, telescopes, digital magnifiers, hotspots that provide free Wi-Fi, children’s launchpads and more. The library’s access to digital tools is also an invaluable resource. Patrons with a card number can access resources for free like Consumer Reports, the language learning program Mango, the electronic version of the NYTimes, Learning Express, which provides practice testing for the G.E.D., nursing exams, license exams, and much more. CCPL provides access to more than 50 databases and subscriptions.

Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children. Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.

“Our library programs serve students and people of all ages,” says Natalie Hauff, Director of Communications and Programming. “For younger children, we offer early literacy resources to help them learn to read and encourage school readiness. We work to keep teens engaged by providing creative programs focused on art and STEM, as well as programs that develop skills needed in college and in the workforce. Adults receive work readiness resources in technology and digital literacy through our Tech Team courses, health and wellness programs, and much more.”

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the ALA and libraries unite in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card. Three ways to win great prizes from CCPL and our #LibraryCardSignUpMonth sponsors!

There are three ways to win some great prizes and CCPL swag during Library Card Sign Up Month.

First, we'll be announcing random branch visits throughout the month, and for a select group of people who show up on those days to get a library card, they'll instantly win a prize! It could be a gift card to a local restaurant, a CCPL prize pack, tickets to a show or popular tourist place, or even some gourmet foods.

Second, for the lucky 9,000th person to sign up for a card online, they will receive a special Tour of Charleston prize pack with tickets to Patriots Point, the Charleston Tea Plantation, and a meal at Bohemian Bull on James Island. How many have signed up online already? We're not telling you that but we're getting close to our goal already this month!

And third, we want to see some #LibraryCardSelfies! We'll be giving away two amazing prizes for your selfies. Someone will win a Selfie Grand Prize -- a $200 gift card to Husk Restaurant! We'll randomly draw a winner from all the selfies submitted during the month. We'll also give a Selfie Date Night Prize Pack to the most creative library card selfie: a pair of tickets to Theater 99 and a gift card to a Glowfisch Hospitality Group restaurant (Sesame, Five Loaves, and Ember Wood Fired Kitchen).

Employees of CCPL and their immediate families are not eligible to win the prizes.
