Book List - Women's History - woman touching a big LED panel of lights
Sunday, March 22, 2020 Charleston County Library

CHARLESTON, S.C. - No one knows books and gives better recommendations than librarians. That's one of our favorite things to do, and we spend a lot of time researching and reading new books and old ones to keep our recommendations fresh.

With our branches closed to the public, having those conversations is a lot more difficult. But it's not impossible! And that's why CCPL's librarians have been digging through our digital resources to build list upon list of digital recommendations.

Each week, we'll share a new list from a different librarian.

First up is a list from Ashley Collins, a Young Adult Librarian in the Teen Lounge at Main Library.

"My booklist is in honor of National Women's History Month and demonstrates some of my favorite books featuring strong, female voices that are also written by women! I chose this list since our tweens and teens aren't able to reach our library right now, and therefore we aren't able to highlight this important month with our programming the way we normally can. I also just feel that it's always a great reminder to see and hear from strong and powerful women, no matter what age or gender you are. It helps us all remember that our voices matter and can make a difference!

"Below are my top twelve picks for titles highlighting books that fit this theme. I also chose a variety of female characters who show that are more than one way to be strong!"

Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin | OverDrive audiobook | Hoopla audiobook

Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

As a huntsman of the Church, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. But when Lou pulls a wicked stunt, the two are forced into an impossible situation—marriage.

Lou, unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, must make a choice. And love makes fools of us all.

Set in a world of powerful women, dark magic, and off-the-charts romance, book one of this stunning fantasy duology will leave readers burning for more.

We Set The Dark On Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia | OverDrive audiobook | Hoopla audiobook

In this daring and romantic fantasy debut perfect for fans of The Handmaid's Tale and Latinx authors Zoraida Córdova and Anna-Marie McLemore, society wife-in-training Dani has a great awakening after being recruited by rebel spies and falling for her biggest rival.

At the Medio School for Girls, distinguished young women are trained for one of two roles in their polarized society. Depending on her specialization, a graduate will one day run a husband's household or raise his children. Both paths promise a life of comfort and luxury, far from the frequent political uprisings of the lower class.

Daniela Vargas is the school's top student, but her pedigree is a lie. She must keep the truth hidden or be sent back to the fringes of society.

And school couldn't prepare her for the difficult choices she must make after graduation, especially when she is asked to spy for a resistance group desperately fighting to bring equality to Medio.

Will Dani cling to the privilege her parents fought to win for her, or will she give up everything she's strived for in pursuit of a free Medio—and a chance at a forbidden love?
