CHARLESTON, S.C. - Teenagers looking for a fun and rewarding volunteer opportunity are encouraged to apply for the Charleston County Public Library’s new Teen Volunteer program. Volunteers will gain valuable experience and skills while enhancing library services and programming in their community. Teens with a variety of interests and abilities are needed to work with library staff as a team devoted to enriching the lives of others.
The Teen Volunteer program launches this spring at the Main library and Wando Mt. Pleasant branch, and will be expanded to include additional CCPL locations in the fall. The deadline for the application has been put on hold due to the coronavirus outbreak.
“This program will help young people develop soft skills like time management, interpersonal communication, self-confidence and teamwork, which are crucial to future academic and workplace success,” said Andria Amaral, Young Adult Services Manager at the Main library. “And we hope they’ll make friends and have fun in the process!”
“We’re excited to offer teens a way to give back to their community in a meaningful way, while also preparing them for their future academic and career endeavors,” adds Melissa Tunstall, Young Adult Services Manager at the Wando Mt. Pleasant library.
Volunteers will learn how to perform a variety of library tasks, assist staff with preparing and presenting programs, and help ensure patrons are finding what they need in the library. In exchange they will get an opportunity to contribute to their community, a sense of accomplishment and self-worth, and Volunteer Service recognition. In addition, being a library volunteer looks great on college applications and resumes!
To become a teen volunteer, a volunteer application packet must be completed. These applications are available upon request at the service desk in the Young Adult departments at Main and Wando, and online at ccpl.org/teenvolunteers. Prospective volunteers must be between 12 and 17 years old. Download an application for Main Library or Wando Mount Pleasant.
Charleston County Public Library has volunteer opportunities that can fit almost any teen’s schedule, but a minimum of two hours per month is required.
Applications for the Spring 2020 session are now on hold until the branches reopen. However, interested teens can still submit their information to express interest in joining the program.
