SEWE takes over the library with events, programs Feb. 15-17

CHARLESTON, S.C. - SEWE is taking over the library! Join Charleston County Public Library as we host a collection of Southeastern Wildlife Expo events at our branches during the three-day event focused on celebrating wildlife and nature through fine art, conservation education, sporting demonstrations, food, drink and the people who honor them all.

The largest event of its kind in the US, SEWE makes its home in Charleston, South Carolina and plays host to hundreds of artists and exhibitors, plus experts in wildlife and nature art – all eager to share their art and insights with more than 40,000 attendees.

From crafts to birds to turtles to a history lesson, we've partnered with SEWE to offer something interesting and fun for everyone!

SEWE Postcards and Green Screen Animal Magic

Saturday Feb. 16 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Stop by the postcard creation station near the Teen Lounge to create a SEWE-inspired souvenir to remember your weekend or share with a friend. Then, step in front of the green screen to find yourself transported to the great outdoors, and have your photo taken with the wildlife celebrated by SEWE.

Hunting “Beasts of Prey” in Colonial South Carolina

Saturday, Feb. 16 at 11 a.m.
In the early decades of this colony, the S.C. legislature offered a bounty to encourage hunting “beasts of prey” that threatened the lives of settlers and slaves. Which animals were hunted to extirpation, and who benefited from the bounty? Join CCPL's historian, Dr. Nic Butler, for a look at a forgotten episode in the lowcountry's natural history.

How to be a Purple Martin Landlord

Saturday, Feb. 16 from 12-1:30 p.m.
Meet resident purple martin landlord Mary Pringle, and Audubon South Carolina’s Jennifer McCarthey Tyrrell to learn about the purple martin, how these birds need your help, and how to host your own colony. This workshop will include information about necessary

A Wild Birds Unlimited representative will explain how to how to entice bluebirds to nest in your yard through providing a proper habitat and safe nesting boxes.

Throughout February
Check out a display of birdhouses created by 9th-12th grade artists in Charleston and Berkeley County schools. Featured birdhouses are built primarily from natural material and/or recyclable goods.
