Join the Charleston County Public Library in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month September 15 to October 15!  Throughout the month-long celebration we will recognize the achievements and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans. Our programs are sponsored by Norsan Media

According to The Library of Congress, the observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson. In, 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded it to 30 days. The day of Sept. 15 is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept.18, respectively. In addition, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is Oct. 12, falls within this 30-day period.

We invite you to visit select branches to check out book displays, attend library programs and participate in activities starting September 15! You can also stream music for free, learn a new language, access ebooks and audiobooks or visit our branches to explore books and more relating to Hispanic heritage.
